Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche & Thrangu Rinpoche

Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche shared a special relationship with Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche.

Khenpo Rinpoche was about 15 years older than Thrangu Rinpoche, and was Thrangu Rinpoche’s study attendant when Thrangu Rinpoche was young. Stories of their friendship could fill books.

Here is a lovely story from Linda Sue Yellin about these special lamas.

Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche, one of the great Masters of the Karma Kagyu, was especially close to Thrangu Rinpoche. We fortunate students of Thrangu Rinpoche benefited from this more than once. During my interview with Thrangu Rinpoche before Vajra Vidya Retreat Center was built in Crestone he advised me to visit KTD for Ngondro retreat. This was my fortunate first personal meeting with Khenpo Khartar Rinpoche in the dining room of the old house KTD occupied. His smile, his manner both disarming & settling.

The bond between Khenpo Rinpoche and Thrangu Rinpoche was profound. It was joyful to witness their strong connection, the joyful interchanges. One year, Thrangu Rinpoche was unable to travel from Nepal for his yearly teachings, he asked Khenpo Rinpoche to continue with Karma Chakme’s “Mountain Dharma” from our study the previous year. Although unplanned it remains a cherished event for me. That summer teaching in Crestone Khenpo Rinpoche guided our small group in daily teachings, conveying clear concise instructions in Mahamudra, how to apply the teachings in daily life.

Khenpo Rinpoche’s visits to Crestone were always delightful, his presence at the Consecration of the Karmapa Stupa, the ground-breaking ceremony for Vajra Vidya Retreat Center, his guidance for our Southwest Stupa Pilgrimage led by Lama Kathy inspired by Khenpo Rinpoche’s encouragement are just a few memories that glow brightly in my mind. My heart remains glad from the loving open way he always greeted me, big smile as his head touched my forehead.

Many of us experienced his total open heart, he made us feel part of the family, of the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. Joyful with his blessings I remain grateful.
